Origin of The Tree-house.

In the earlier days, tree houses were basically a kind of temporary shelter built on top of a strong tree that holds and supports the base of the tree house. It was completely constructed out of wood and similar raw materials. Tree house would only provide the essential & very basic functionalities of stay with no bathrooms or kitchen associated along with it. It was initially created as a shelter to protect humans from wild animals like lions, tigers and other predators. Usually a long chain of bamboo sticks joined together with the help of tight ropes are used as ladders. This would not be fixed and can be pulled atop once you climb inside the tree house. It was also a defensive mechanism to avoid any wild animals to climb their way on to the tree house.

Tree houses are generally constructed in the wild areas preferably near forests so that the real life wild experience is enhanced.

As time passed by these tree houses or “Erumadam” became a means of keeping a watch over a large field of agriculture. This would give a better view of the agricultural area along with its protection from unwanted animals and birds.

With wildness seeping into areas of travel and tourism, the old concept of tree houses has been restructured and frame worked so that it would serve as an ideal attraction for tourists in love with nature and wildlife. Initially it did not gain much acceptance due to several factors such as ideal location of tree house, its safety concerns, facilities it would lack, the limitation of activities tree house stays would provide, etc. But with the advancement of technology and better construction methodologies, this idea has been well incorporated successfully as a better new way of attracting tourists to experience wildlife within their actual habitat.

Gradually, tree houses started gaining popularity amongst the foreign tourists much due to their love for wildlife. Correcting the shortcomings and limitations of Tree house construction and its maintenance, many hospitality enterprises began promoting tree house tourism as an additional facility to their existing wildlife tours and travel packages.
